U17 skipper Benjy Furrer won the toss and elected to bat at BSCC, on a glorious day in front of a good crowd.
We got off to a magnificent start with Ben Cowper striking the ball beautifully for a quick fire 41 before being well caught. His opening partner Murray Davidson wasn’t to be stopped as he went on to retire for a classy 50* off 29 balls, including a phenomenal flick for 6 off his pads. Will Cutlan-Smyth continued the aggression with 33 including an excellent flick for 6 of his own, before Aidan Murphy came in and hit the St Margs bowlers all over to retire for 50* in just 23 balls! A late partnership between Matt Jones (20*) and Olly Hartnell (11*) helped us reach an incredible 233-2 in our 20 overs.
In the response, Max Walter got us off to a flyer bowling rapidly and taking 2 early wickets, with the second involving a stunning diving catch from keeper Benjy Furrer. Sam Robinson also took an early wicket to leave St Margs 3-3 after 2 overs. After a short break in the wickets, Liam Mays came on and bowled excellently to take 3 wickets for 5 runs before Aidan Murphy took the final three wickets in just 9 balls! St Margs struggled to score off our tight bowling, bar their No.5 batsmen who batted very well for his 37 runs, albeit let off by a couple of dropped catches, as St Margs were bowled out for 68 runs.
It was a near perfect display for our lads in their first game of the season, with the only remote negative coming from the 2 dropped catches, however the batting and bowling was genuinely outstanding.
We now look forward to going to Hoddesdon next Friday for the second group game!
