With heavy rain overnight it was in doubt the game could be played due to a wet pitch, but after negotiating with the groundsman we got underway at 11am, a must win game to keep us on track for a semi-final place.
We won the toss and fielded fist. Hitchin got off to a good start with county player Chloe scoring well off her opening 6 free balls and going on to retire not out. The first wicket was their number 2 batter being caught by Emily off Poppy's bowling in the 6th over. The 2nd 4 overs later to Catherine with a catch by Poppy. But the fireworks happened in the 12th over when Eva came on to bowl. Her first 2 balls resulting in 2 wickets, unfortunately not a straight hattrick with her next a dot, but followed up in style with 2 more wickets from the raining 3 balls - 0-4!
After that their scoring was slow. Suzie and Emma added to our wicket tally with lots of catches in the field from Poppy, Marie, Suzie Eva and Barnsey, leaving Hitchin finishing on 85-9 after the 20 overs.
Opening batters Suzie and Eva got off to a flying start with 21 scored in the first 2 overs. Suzie out LBW in over 3 bought Poppy (16-no) to the crease who continued to increase the runs with Eva who retired not out on 25 after 25 balls. Catherine was the only other batter adding 5 to the total before reaching our target in just 10 overs.
A good performance for the girls against a much weaker opposition, but got the job done in an impressive style.
Player of the match undoubtedly goes to Eva with her 6-4 and 25*.
On to our penultimate game tonight against Harpenden 1s who are battling with us for the semi-final spot. A tough game beckons!
