The Hawks second match of Sunday was our much anticipated regional cup quarter final at home against Thriplow. We knew this was going to be a tough match, with Thriplow having won the cup a few times before.
The Hawks won the toss and elected to field first.
We were off to a great start with a superb bowl by Anastasia, caught by Daisy leaving Thriplow 8/1 (and slightly shocked!) at the end of the first over. The home supporters were fired up and ready to go!
This was followed by a high-speed wicket for Grace in the third over and a fantastic run out in the fourth by Anastasia – Thriplow were now 35/3.
Further clean-bowled wickets from Grace (to take their opener who was looking to score high) and Anastasia left Thriplow on 56/5 after 8 overs.
Despite some fast accurate bowling and quick fielding, things just wouldn’t quite go our way from then on, allowing two of Thriplow’s batters to create a partnership of 62. After a third wicket for Grace, Thriplow ended their innings on 130/6.
With some big hitters in the Hawks we knew this was a tough but achievable target and this was going to be an exciting match!
Evie and Mattie opened the Hawks’ innings with some fast running between the wickets and a couple of lovely boundary shots.
Evie (16) was followed by Daisy who hit a beautiful boundary shot (Joe B’s “shot of the day”!) and then by Grace (10) who added some much-needed runs.
Despite some impressive running between the wickets and sensible calling, accurate loopy bowling from Thriplow’s key bowler (taking 4 wickets from 5 overs) meant we couldn’t quite get a partnership going.
The Hawks were left agonisingly 28 runs short on 103 all out.
Special mentions to:
• Daisy for her impressive catch in the field and her shot of the day!
• Anastasia for her 2 wickets and Grace for her 3 wickets!
• Mattie for her 44 runs (lasting until the 17th over!)
• Imi for her superb wicket keeping – just 7 byes from the 20 overs despite some fast bowling!
Well done to all the girls. Its fair to say there were definitely some decisions that didn’t go our way but the girls remained determined and accepted the decisions with good grace.
Thank you to James for umpiring and all the supporters (including some of the U15 team who came along to cheer after their match ended).
A great achievement for the team to have got this far (the semi is ours for the taking next year!) and we still have the league finale to look forward to!
