On a chilly Sunday morning the U13 girls hosted Grand Union for the first league game of the season, using the pairs cricket format. The Opposition struggled for numbers so we gave them two players; Lea and Elizabeth so we can continue the drive to get match practice for as many girls as possible at the start of the season, following not being able to run winter training. GU won the toss and elected to bat. Marie and Catherine got us off to a strong start with 4 tight overs with Catherine taking 2 for 2 runs. The middle overs were bowled well, with bowling noticeably getting better as the girls shock off the rust of winter and rediscovered their technique. The final overs bowled were against the best batters and an outstanding bowling performance from Saskia took another 3 wickets (3-1-7-3). Poppy did a great job of captaining the team, with warm ups, good field placement and careful consideration of batting order.
When Stortford batted the girls again were rediscovering their skills, and easily surpassed Grand Union's score. Again the outstanding player being Saskia with 31 not out. Good contributions from Alice (8 no) and Wanatsa (5 no) .
So a great start that will help us as the fixtures get harder over the coming weeks. Well done girls!
Player of the match - Saskia Heard.
