U12s disappointed to lose the final in a tight match

We were truly delighted that the Bishop's Stortford CC U12 girls made the final of the competition in our first year, and so travelled to West Herts CC in Watford, optimistic but knowing we were playing a strong long established St Albans side who has won all of their games in the league prior to the final. SA won the toss and elected to field. BSCC made steady progress accumulating a good 283 and crucially only lost one wicket, but weren't able to find the boundary in their innings. Top scorer was Marie Surujbally with 10 not out. In the chase St Albans batted aggressively hitting the boundary a number of times but also taking more risks and so BSCC pegged them back by taking wickets at key times. Their excellent fielding being cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd of supporters as they fought hard to defend their score. BSCC bowled less wides and only 3 byes conceded by wicket keeper Olivia Kirkham and a good catch as well. The game came down to 3 runs needed off the final over which St Albans achieved by smart batting, and the game was lost. Marie finished her player of the match performance by taking 2 wickets for just 9 runs. Elizabeth Clune also taking three good catches.
The girls showed wonderful spirit and courage in the hot weather to put up an excellent performance. Credit to St Albans who won it through their strong batting performance, but a wonderful achievement for the girls to receive their runners up medals from the Head of girls cricket in Hertfordshire Tom Ruxton and Amy Price Ladies captain.
