U9 lose to Braughing

U9 finally met their match on a cool and breezy evening in Braughing. Rain had made the outfield damp and slow and on more than 1 occasion batters from both teams stopped running in anticipation of a boundary, only for the ball to stop short and be retrieved by a fielder.

U9 had lost the toss and got off to a shaky start with the bat. Freddie and Farai both hit 4’s but otherwise the wickets tumbled as U9 mistimed too many of their shots, giving the capable Braughing fielders 6 catches in the first 7 overs. The final pair offered some resistance. Olly found the boundary twice to top score for the U9 with an unbeaten 11 runs. He and Angus added 25 runs in the final 4 overs and without losing a wicket, helping close the innings at 241/9.

U9 bowling was not quite up the high standard that we have seen this summer. Alex made the first and second breakthrough in the seventh over, grabbing 2 wickets for 10 runs off his 2 overs. But by the midway point of the innings Braughing had been given 39 extras and were only 5 runs short of the target at 237/2. Farai was the pick of the U9 bowlers, his 1 wicket coming at a cost of just 3 runs to keep U9 in the game as the final pair came to the crease. But it was not to be on this occasion as Braughing’s star batter punished everything short of a length, crashing 5 boundaries to finish unbeaten on 20 and see Braughing to a 16 run victory.
