On a lovely sunny June evening, Herts 1s (unbeaten so far!) won the toss and decided to bowl. Batting first was not normal for BSCC, but we batted sensibly and put up a winnable 303/3 total. Batting highlights were Daniel (16), Harrison (12) and Stanley (10). Herts' bowling lacked potency with 24 wides (48 runs!), which led BSCC to believe maybe Herts had a weak team out.
This was a MISTAKE. After a steady bowling spell by Harrison (1w-9r) and Ozzie (0w-15r) Herts were behind the run rate with only 19 runs. However, Sonny and Keiran had other ideas and dispatched Sam's next over for 15. I had to step in and bring in Cameron to fight fire with fire and Sam was happy to bowl later, which worked well and the pair finished with the score on 249.
The batting attack had not subsided as another Herts batter took liking to William. Daniel was brought in and he also went for 8 runs, but managed to grab a key wicket. The score was 275 when the last two Herts batters walked in. Cameron (1w-10r) and Daniel (1w-12r) continued their spell and stayed aggressive providing plenty of bouncers and body blows to the Herts batters. And in reply Herts batters smacked the ball around the plateau with our fielders receiving multiple finger injuries! Poor Henry also took some bruising, however his keeping was top-notch, easily saving 20 runs for the team. Things were heating up now - who says incrediballs are "soft". Sam (2w-21r) then bowled a brilliant over taking two valuable wickets and even though 4 boundaries were hit off the last over, Herts ended 13 runs short at 290/5.
It was a gallant effort by Herts batters, who were clearly a stronger batting side on the day. However, our bowling and high fielding energy was outstanding and neutralised all the Herts attacks.
This was the toughest match our youngsters have played so far and came out victorious, which will give them great confidence in their cricketing future. For me, it was my proudest day as a coach and I thank all the players for not flinching when the going got tough - well done boys - you deserve the top spot!
