Parents, coaches and umpires were left on the edge of a nervous breakdown as U10 were involved in a dramatic last ball finish for the second time in 6 days. Final pair Max and Farai timed the chase perfectly, reducing the runs required from 22 from 25 to 2 from 5. Max hit 3 runs to nudge U10 ahead, before he and Farai added 3 more for good measure. But Broxbourne struck back with the penultimate ball of the match. Max's head dropped as he missed a full and straight delivery to hear the dreaded death rattle behind him. The scores were level as the final ball passed Farai's bat. But a fumble by the wicketkeeper allowed Max just enough time to scamper home and make his ground by the skin of his teeth.
Earlier in the day U10 had won the toss and decided to bowl. A brief shower interrupted play just as the second pair were due at the crease. Aaron, Bradley and Max all shared the wickets but a super direct hit from Teddy from backward square leg was the highlight of another impressive and energetic fielding display by U10.
Chasing 261 to win, Ollie and Teddy got busy at the crease, scoring several 1s and 2s to put the Broxbourne field under pressure. Second pair Bradley and Aaron kept the scoreboard ticking despite not always reaching agreement on whether to run or not. Brandon and Angus did well to not lose a wicket and move the score to 239/2 at the end of their set. The highlight of the innings was Angus clipping the ball off his legs to square legs for 2 runs shortly before the drama was to unfold.
This was another very enjoyable game of U10 cricket. The players on both sides handled the pressure incredibly well and bowling and fielding was to a very god standard indeed. The teams will meet again next week when Broxbourne will surely look to avenge their narrow defeat here.
Well done U10!
