Broxbourne won the toss and decided to bat on their first team pitch. It was a glorious pitch and perfect weather conditions for cricket.
We bowled and fielded well - a norm these days; Daniel bowled 3 overs for only 4 runs, Harrison picked up 2 wickets off 2 overs and Ed, Ossie & Tom picked up a wicket each and there was even a run out. Broxbourne finished on 249/6, which we thought was a below par score on a cracking batting wicket.
However, we had our worse start of the season with Harrison bowled out to straight deliveries three times and Ossie once, with their score on 187 after 4 overs. Ollie and Tom Coombes played positively and more importantly did not lose a wicket, scoring 18 runs. Similarly, Sam and Freddie pushed along nicely to 224, but again Sam missed a straight one and got bowled. With two balls to go, Freddie who joined top scored with 13 runs, got a shorter delivery which rose and hit his finger and had to leave the field - we wish him a quick recovery. His bravery and attacking batting was a great example to all and helped BSCC get back on track.
Ed (13 runs) and Daniel needed 26 runs off their last 4 overs and played some glorious strokes, both hitting 2 boundaries each. But again, Daniel missed a straight one and was bowled out. So, unfortunately, we finished just 4 runs short and were beaten by Broxbourne for the second time this season. We will have to dust off and continue, but make sure we learn from our mistakes. BLOCKING good straight deliveries and being positive on wider deliveries is something we all need to work on.
The next match is another hardball match against Datchworth next Thursday (24th), which Chris, Harrison's dad will be manage in my absence. Let's help Chris with a victory!
