Zain won the toss and batted first on a warm evening at Braighing. He and Jake started well despite losing a wicket in the first over with Zain hitting 2 excellent off drives for 4 and also benefitting from 4 overthrows. Austin and Seth batted more cautiously picking up a few singles but they were both out once leaving us on 226 at the half way. Jago and Noah both hit a good boundary and collected more singles but a needless run out and 2 more wickets restricted us to 239 at the end of their innings. The theme continued with Elliott and Brendan as they run and called well but were both bowled slogging across a straight ball so we ended on 248-8.
Braughing looked to start aggressively and got to 216 after only 2 overs but Zain and Jake both took 2 wickets in their second overs thanks to straight bowling and 2 great catches from Noah. Austin also took a wicket and Seth bowled tidily leaving then poised on 222 at the half way stage. Jago took an excellent catch off Noah and an easy run out kept them down to 232 with 1 pair left. They hit 3 good boundaries but a superb catch off his own bowling by Brendan left them needing to survive the last 3 balls without losing a wicket which they did giving them a hard fought victory by 3 runs.
This was an exciting game with 2 evenly matched teams and I thought the boys bowled well and fielded superbly and the main lesson yesterday was sometimes you have to defend a good straight ball rather than trying to smash a boundary every time.
