We had a young inexperienced team with 3 boys making their hardball debut and after being asked to bat first we struggled to cope with the Hertford bowling losing 9 wickets in all, with 8 being clean bowled and 1 unlucky run out. We must learn to defend a straight ball rather than trying to hit it over the boundary. Molly and Matthew punished some wayward bowling with good 4s and ran well scoring 10 & 9 respectively. It was left to the skipper, Tate, to show the way as he batted beautifully scoring 15 runs and getting us to 222-9 at the close.
Hertford were able to play fairly defensively and crucially protected their wicket very well as Stortford could only manage 1 wicket with a run out thanks to a great throw from Toby. Everyone bowled creditably but were unable to make another breakthrough - Toby 2 overs for 12, Andrew 2 for 13 runs, Molly 3 overs for 12 and Harry 2 conceding only 6 runs. Vishay bowled 2 for 16 nearly getting a caught and bowled wicket, Adam 2 for 9 including a maiden over and Matthew was very unlucky not to take a wicket with his 3 overs costing only 3 runs and he beat the bat consistently.
Hopefully the new boys enjoyed their debut and will have gained useful experience in playing hardball cricket.
