An inexperienced u11s side played a friendly with Great Dunmow in glorious sunshine. To our surprise the opposition requested we use an incrediball which our kids have not used all season. This was clearly in the minds of most batters as they struggled with the exaggerated movement and bounce you get with this type of ball. That said, if you don’t play forward and straight to bowlers you are always going to come unstuck at some stage. Wickets tumbled all around the one batter to come to terms with the conditions Harry F (20). Bowled out for not very much Stortford went round the clock and the openers came back in….this time Olly A (9) and Conran (21) made a much better job of it. Stortford ended up on 85.
Our fielding was generally good with some impressive boundary saves and Jack T managed a hat-trick of catches! The bowling varied with some exceptional and some a bit wayward and short. Wickets were shared with one each for debutant Tate, Conran, Harry F and the excellent Grace whose wicket was accompanied by two maidens from her two overs! It would have taken something special to top Grace’s performance and Ed W delivered! In two fun packed overs he bowled with accuracy and skill to take our first age group “fifer” of the season! 5 wickets in 12 balls! Despite this, Dunmow moved past Stortford’s total to end up comfortable winners with 9 balls remaining. Overall a nice evening in the sun and by pitching the ball up as bowlers and playing forward and straight as batters the kids know they will all be better cricketers.
