"Cricket doesn't get better than this"

U11s T2 skipper Sam B won the toss and decided to bowl on a green surface which had thankfully dried out following days and days of rain. Excellent tight bowling saw WGC restricted to just 19 runs from their first 9 overs! However in the middle overs our discipline with ball in hand and in the field deserted us. We hemorrhaged 54 runs in 5 uncharacteristically sloppy overs! Wickets were limited to Harry F (2) and 1 each for Thomas, Fynn and Chris. Despite regaining some control and executing two excellent run-outs, we faced a daunting run chase, needing 99 for victory in fading light. However we started well and needing 5 runs an over for victory Ed F (24) and Thomas A (6) got us to nearly 50 off 10 overs. That excellent platform was soon toppled as we lost 6 wickets for 14 runs in only 6 overs! That left us needing almost 40 off the final 4 overs! Up stepped Harry F (18) and Ed W (13) who played with real intensity and intelligence. They both hit some lovely shots square on the offside and straight through the "V". On top of this they ran hard and took us to parity, 98 runs with two balls to spare. At 98 for 6 we were "winning" as we had an equal score but had lost one less wicket. Next ball......well of course we went for the winning runs and Ed was run out...so 98 for 7. It was now identical scores / wickets lost with one ball to come. On that final ball, if we lost a wicket we would lose the match, if we scored runs we'd win and if we failed to score I would have been reaching for the rule book to separate the sides! Thankfully Conran, facing his first ball and the last ball of the match, late cut their opening bowler for 4 to ensure we started the summer league with a win. A fantastic game played by both sides, but I'm not sure my cardiologist would approve!
Well done to all the boys who all bowled, most had a bat and special thanks to Oliver and Fynn who took turns for keep wicket for 10 overs each as well as completing an over of bowling. Next up Hertford next Thursday evening.
