u12 Sloggers come out ahead in tense Sunday morning encounter!

The Sloggers began their B league campaign in the unfamiliar surroundings of Jobbers Wood. It was also our first experience of 10-a-side pairs cricket.

Skipper Grace won the toss and elected to bowl. Good early bowling was rewarded with 2 wickets for Dylan and a runout…..restricting the away side in the first 8 overs. Grace and Thomas C bowled well, however we then started to bowl a little too short (common early season after a winter indoors) and the opposition built their score. This culminated with Pirton’s “district” batter pushing the opposition to a total of 276 for 3 with some lusty blows.

The total was well within our grasp if we batted sensibly. We largely did that. Dylan and Harrison lost one wicket putting on 19. Grace and Max added a very impressive 29 runs. (Max hitting one lovely four.) Jack and Kieran got their wires crossed a couple of times and lost a few wickets. However Byron and Thomas ran really well and allowed only 8 dot balls in their 24 as they pushed our score back up. Needing 10 from the last pair against the opponents best bowlers, Frank and Harry batted with great maturity….first nudging us beyond the opponents total and then playing out the final two overs without risk to ensure we came out with a 9 run victory.

A great first game, great to get some match time in for all players and great to see again how improved the kids are this season repaying the dedication and effort most have put in over the winter.
