Our nemesis Broxbourne came to Cricketfield Lane on Tuesday evening, in an important U12 Herts Junior League clash. The midday rain had cleared and a stiff breeze ensured conditions were dry and a decent crowd looked on expectantly. Broxbourne won the toss and elected to field, meaning the Eagles would have to post a decent total, if they were to stand a chance of finally defeating their rivals from the Lee Valley for the very first time. Openers Will Richardson and Austen Greenhill took the ‘sting’ out of the Broxbourne bowling attack, as the ball really was ‘zipping around’ early on. The key to The Eagles final total of 109, was very much down to Charlie Waugh (18) and Lewis Greenhill (26 no ret’d), who both batted with such maturity and intent. This solid foundation (54-2 at half way) was then backed up by Sam McGinn (11), Olly Sturrock (11) and Tom Foden (9 not out) to ensure a challenging total was posted.
With Broxbourne requiring 110 to win, The Eagles knew that if they bowled with great discipline, backed up with energy and a strong team ethic in the field, then they would have a strong chance. And so it proved, as the bowling was miserly, ruthless and absolutely relentless. . . as these figures demonstrate:-
Tom Foden (2 overs - 5 runs - 2 wickets), Luca Livermore (3 overs - 3 runs - 1 wicket), Sam McGinn (2 overs - 5 runs), Ethan Hill (2 overs - 3 runs), Arthur Howes (3 overs - 8 runs), Max Foster (2 overs - 7 runs), Olly Sturrock (2 overs - 6 runs) and Austen Greenhill (2 overs - 11 runs).
Broxbourne were simply never able to ‘get going’, as The Eagles bowlers bowled only 7 wides/no balls in 20 overs.
Broxbourne were 23 for 5 wickets after 10 overs and towards the end of the innings were just 60 runs for 5 wickets after 18 overs. The final total of 79 meant the victory margin of 30 runs was actually closer than it might have been.
The season is still in its early stages. . . .but an important hurdle has been overcome. It has been proven that Broxbourne A team ‘can’ be defeated.
