U12’s play out 'thrilling' final derby of season

In the dying embers of what has been a quite fabulous Summer of junior cricket, the Under 12’s ended the season in style, in what was a dramatic and closely fought derby yesterday evening. A large crowd of parents gathered in glorious late August sunshine and despite the deluge of the previous day, Cricketfield Lane had dried out quite remarkably. And so the scene was set….
Lions captain Ethan Hill won the toss and inserted the Vipers to bat and the innings started positively. Luca Livermore (16) built a solid platform, which was then backed up by Thomas Appleby (24), but there was a huge shift in momentum late on, thanks to an incredible quadruple wicket maiden (which included a hat-trick) from leg spinner William Richardson. 3 of those 4 wickets were stumpings from the ever alert keeper Krish Fernando. The Vipers ultimately amassed a total of 120 for 9 wickets, but after sitting at 102-3 after 14 overs, it was a brilliant Lions comeback.
Chasing 121, Vipers captain Ciaran Wilson had to carefully juggle his bowlers, with opening Lions pair Krish (30 not out retired) and Jack Tumelty impressing with the bat. Will Tredgett then added some quick fire runs, but ultimately the target always felt it might be just out of the Lions reach. With the ball Max Foster gave absolutely nothing away; Daniel Carlin bowled with good pace at a key stage of the match and and Luca grabbed 2 vital wickets at the death.
The key difference between the 2 sides and ultimately the result, were the number of extras conceded. We must cut out the number of wides/no balls and byes.
But this game was certainly not about the result. It was played in a wonderfully competitive, yet very respectful manner. It yet again highlighted the tremendous strength in depth at U12s; what a memorable evening for all those involved.
