BSCC 161/5 beat Harlow 102/5

BSCC lost the toss and were put into bat on a very Dewy wicket at 9.30am.

As a last minute addition to the team, Cam (75) travelled 2 hours from his grand parents' to play in his first Brian Taylor cup match with an innings none of us will forget in a hurry! He opened with Stan G (5), followed shortly by Dan L (0) and then Ed C (3), who were all clean bowled by straight deliveries. Cam kept his head and batted sensibly with Ossie (44 n.o.) to take the total from 40/3 to a very commandable 152 runs, before knicking one to the keeper. BSCC ended their 25 overs with 161/5 leaving the boisterous Harlow team in complete dissarray and deflated.

Harlow started their innings solid enough, seeing off overs from Henry, Dan L, Stan and Monty without losing a wicket, but not really keeping up with the required run rate. Ollie then started his spell taking 3 wickets in his 3 overs by bowling straight. Cam on the other side was ruthless and quick, striking the brave Harlow opener a few times, who did end up their top scorer at 40. Ossie, Felix, Dan B and Ed C also bowled well, restricting Harlow to a meager 102/5 off 25 overs. The boys were energetic, alert in the field and gave it 100%.

My only advice would be to make sure we have a better defence and able to block straight deliveries. In the nets the ball behaves predictably, but on real pitches it can deviate more making the forward lunge to create a wall with the bat and pad together very handy indeed. In addition, to realise that this is a longer format and sometimes blocking 6 good balls in a row is fine and part of the game.

Our next BT Cup opponents are Hockerill away on Sun 13th (9.310am), so we have a couple of weeks to further improve, before we face the past winners Saffron Walden on Sun 18th July, unfortunately on the same day as the league finals! Thanks again to Cam's parents for making him available today.
