Brilliant 10 wicket win at Broxbourne!

On a rare pleasant evening, the U12s took on Broxbourne in a friendly tonight and came out comfortable winners.

The deputising captain Henry Hawkins won the toss and chose to bowl, and whilst Broxbourne weren’t at full strength, it was their two regular openers who came in so we knew it wouldn’t be easy. They started pretty well until Ed Stabb managed to bowl one of the openers with a ball that stayed very low, however the other opener batted well and went on to retire for 33*. One he’d gone, we managed to take regular wickets throughout the innings, with wickets for Matthew Furrer, Fraser Hardie, Harry Thompson and a Harry Pigram run out. Unfortunately whilst we bowled a lot of dot balls, we also bowled a lot of extras which meant they were able to get a very decent score of 122 in their 20 overs. There was a cool moment at the end where Harry Pigram managed clean bowl their No.4 and uproot the stump, sending it flying, leaving the other two stumps and bail untouched.

Having only just managed to chase 76 in 19.4 overs earlier in the year at Broxbourne, albeit with both teams being much changed, we thought 122 would be a difficult chase. Henry Hawkins and Harry Pigram thought otherwise as they combined fantastically to put on a 70 partnership, with both boys retiring for 32* and 31* respectively. Zac Saunders came in and continued to pile into the Broxbourne bowlers, also managing to retire for 30*! In the end, our No.5 Fraser Hardie came in with the simple task of needing 1 run off 5 overs and proceeded to cream it through the covers for 4, completing a convincing win.

Whilst Broxbourne weren’t at full strength, they still had a very decent team out and the way we went about it tonight was top quality. I thought we bowled well, although there were far too many extras, we fielded very well as a unit, and then the batsmen, in particular the top three were truly excellent, with all three of them mixing proper technical shots with the odd whack over cow corner to perfection.

It was a great way to end the away season, with just the final inter BSCC U12 squad friendly on Friday 30th to come!
