BSCC U12 vs Coggeshall

Unfortunately, having played arguably our best ever game last week, we played arguably our worst game ever today at Coggeshall Town. Top to bottom, pretty much everything went wrong.

The only part of the game we won was the toss! We decided to bat on what looked a good batting wicket with a short boundary one side. Unfortunately that choice didn’t pay off as we lost our top 4 very early with 3 of them caught and bowled. Jamie Ward and Thomas Greenhill showed some character and put on 30 together before some poor calling resulted in Thomas being ran out. Jamie was bowled two balls later for 17, which meant we could only stumble our way to 106-9 in 25 overs. Elizabeth batted well in the last few overs getting 11*.

We knew we needed to have a blinder in the field to have any chance but it’s fair to say we didn’t have a blinder. It should be noted we didn’t have Paddy or Lucas who have opened the bowling for us excellently all season, but that’s not an excuse for how poorly we bowled.

We bowled 4 wides and 2 no balls in the first 3 overs (having bowled 0 wides/no balls in the entire innings last week!), which gave them the impotus. However extras weren’t the huge problem, it was the fact we bowled so many half trackers and full tosses which continually got dispatched by Coggeshall’s two impressive openers. In the end, they cantered to our total in 13 overs, only giving us one proper catching chance.

It should be said that Coggeshall were a good team but we could’ve won the game had we played anywhere near our usual standards.

At the end of the day, it’s our first loss in what has been an excellent start to the season, so it’s important not to be too negative. The players knew they’d had a seriously off day today, but it is a chance for them to learn and hopefully progress as a team moving forward!

Let’s hope we can put this behind us and put in a big performance against Hertford on Tuesday!
