Our best batting performance of the season

On a cold and eventually damp night at Welwyn, the home side won the toss and batted first. Harry Griffin's customary accuracy saw off one of Welwyn's openers and two overs later Alec bowled his partner to leave our hosts 7 for 2. Two difficult catches also went down, before the third wicket pair began to dig in and at 28 for 2 a recovery of sorts was underway. But Adam Crowther's good catch from Charlie Peace's tempting left-arm spin put the brakes on again, and Welwyn never really looked like getting to three figures.

Coby Miles bowled a tight spell towards the end, and helped by a very good catch from Stephen Walsh, took the fourth wicket of the innings. A total of 89-4 from 20 overs was aided by 22 wides, but on a good batting track and huge outfield I was confident we would be able to knock off the runs.

A good start was crucial and that was exactly what we got as Alec and Zac put on a sparkling stand of 61 in the first 9 overs. Zac's 19 included a series of excellent shots (as well as a 5) and Alec was untroubled on his way to a better than a run-a-ball 30. Adam Crowther came in at 3 and stroked the ball around delightfully as well as running brilliantly between the wickets, and in tandem with Coby, saw us home inside 13 overs.

The Welwyn parents and coach were very impressed with our lads, and rightly so. We have bowled and fielded better this season but rarely batted with such assurance and with the batting we had in reserve I would have been confident at chasing 130.

After last week's disappointing loss at Hertford it was good to see the boys bounce back in such style.
