Our split squad system works a treat

While one half of the squad was beating Stansted Hall & Elsenham, the other inflicted a second defeat in a fortnight on Welwyn Garden City.

After Jamie Riley cleaned up one of WGC's openers, the second wicket pair found the pace of Jamie and Connor Mak to their liking and sprinted to 70 inside 11 overs. Skipper Bradley Moon turned to his slower bowlers and it was they who applied the brakes, with the left-arm spin of Charlie Peace (2-17) and Joe Burslem (1-7) cutting a swathe through Welwyn's middle order. Special mention must go to Jacob Capener, who marked his debut for the side with a remarkable spell of 4-0-10-1 that saw our visitors crawl to 101-5 after they had threatened a much bigger total.

Our reply got off to its customary Bradley Moon-inspired flier. Brad hit another of his trademark sixes and retired at 30, which was especially important as by then we had lost Adam Bassingthwaighte to a controversial run out (controversial in that he was given out when he wasn't, the bails having already been removed before the ball hit the stumps).

When Alex Brown followed after his second consecutive run out, Joe Burslem came in and continued to show that he's coming back into the batting form that made him so effective for us last season. He too retired at 30, and such was the pace at which he and Brad made their runs that we survived a mini middle order collapse to win with three overs to spare, Jamie Riley and Connor Mak seeing us over the line with the bat.

It is never easy to chase down a total of 100 and credit has to go to the side for restricting Welwyn after their quick start and then passing the total so comfortably. It's a tribute to the boys' ability that we were able to win two games played on the same day, and is testimony to the hard work put in by Eddie Ballard and his team of coaches.
