U15s skipper Henry H won the toss and chose to bat on a warm evening on a flat looking track.
Openers Henry H (42*) and Ben T (28 off 14 balls!) hit a series of sumptuous drives and violent pulls as they cantered along at 10 an over. After that partnership of 52, Henry and James F(25) combined for another 50+ partnership with similarly destructive stroke play. 108 for 1 then became 108 for 5! Wicket after wicket fell to a mix of good leg spin bowling and slogging. After a needless runout, 117-7 looked like a potentially devastating collapse. However the “tail wagged” and Tom C and Will S shared a quick 30 run partnership leaving us with a 147 total.
Stortford opened with spin and it delivered a wicket in he first over! In fact the spin / pace combination worked a treat ensuring opposition batters could not settle into a rhythm. The boys bowled with great control aided by excellent defensive fields. This ensured WGC never really got close to the run rate required. WGC wickets were shared by Alex W, Tom C, Sam B, Ben T and Will S and there was some good catching too.
The margin of victory was 27 runs, but really it was wider than that.
Shout outs to Sam B and Charlie W playing up two years! Sam bowled brilliantly taking 2 important wickets at 3 runs an over. Charlie W was similarly superb behind the stumps earning praise from the opposition coach and parents for his athleticism.
Great effort from all and now the mighty Broxbourne and a Herts National Qualifier await next week!
