10 men tame Badgers

With injury and illness late in the week prompting some last minute call ups, a 10 man U15 side travelled to Broxbourne for an early start happy to be playing their first game of the season.

This quick report is with the help of correspondents in the field and an immaculate score book. Thank you all.

Thanks to Tommy B running the game for us.

Batting first - well we had to as we only had 9 players in Broxbourne at the start - Joe Burslem led from the front with an excellent 43 (2 sixes, 6 fours). Against some indifferent bowling and a small boundary the middle order weighed in with scores to maintain the momentum of the innings- David Townsend (13), Ben Chillingworth (19), Keaton Weeks (14).

With the lost ball count rising - the 100 came up in the 11th over. But with a retirement and 4 wickets down the innings could have faltered. Luckily we had Will Palmer-Fenny (8no) to manage the late arriving Joe Hawkins who tucked in with a quick fire 33.

With the help of 30 extras we posted an impressive 170 for 5 with 8 players getting a hit.

Our opening bowlers Ben Chillingworth (0-28) & Keaton Weeks (0-12) set the tone with good line & length with the Broxbourne reply immediately behind the run rate through the first 6 overs despite their opener A Jones going on to scoring 44 (retired).

Josh Simons (1-26) and Ed Catton (0-19 from 4 overs) continued to tie up the Broxbourne batsmen.

By 15 overs Broxbourne had only reached 91. To further frustrate the opposition the captain let loose Matt Foster (0-9) and Henry Marsden (1-1 off 2) with their chase ending on 110-5

A couple of catches, a stumping and a run out suggest our fielding backed up our bowlers well.

Very pleasing to note our innings did not falter when it could have done and that we only gave away 8 extras in the Broxbourne innings. A well managed and executed game particularly for a team where the bulk of the players are U13 or U14.

Rob Gore the Broxbourne team manager has sent though his congratulations and noted the game was played in a good spirit. Well done all.

We will welcome Broxbourne later in the season in the Summer League and turn next to our game on Tuesday 24th May vs Hoddesdon
