First use of the new pavilion was awarded to John Lyle's Fourth team and their opponents High Beach. Stortford's average age was reduced to about 40 by the presence of Austin Sewell, whose father, himself quite young compared to some of the squad, began proceedings with a quick 27.
After Nathan had patted a long hop to square leg, Dave Wilkinson set about the visitors' bowling with enthusiasm, and occasionally some skill. He and Graeme Sumner put on 50 before Wilko decided he wanted a new partner and ran out Sumo for 25. Fred Hussein then smacked a quick 50 before Wilkinson finally succumbed for 78 to the fine bowling of High Beech skipper and resident Aussie, Mick Evans. Dave Hardcastle stroked 28 to help the home total to a challenging 279 for 6.
Things looked good for Lyle's men as both openers were dismissed quickly by young Sewell and old Cluderay (1-27). One hour and about 100 runs later there were fewer grounds for optimism. Dave Baker (65) and Mick Taylor (68) had taken up the challenge with some style and a little luck. Drinks, however, often favour the bowling side and this proved to be the case as wickets began to fall.
Austin Sewell's second spell was too fast and too accurate for the opposition. Dodders (3-46) at the other end was not quite as quick but picked up three good wickets. Sumner (2-53)nipped in with a couple and Fred surprised everyone by taking a diving catch to finish things off.
Austin Sewell's 3-29 in 10 overs was the key to victory, and his overall performance meant he just pipped Dave Wilkinson for man of the match. Yet again youth triumphed over age!
