We had a BSCC Inter-squad friendly last night on a chilly evening at Jobbers Wood with all the clubs U17s and U19s, plus a few U16s. The game had some really high quality cricket and showcased the excellent talent we have in our junior squads.
U19 skipper Harry Olorenshaw captained one team and U17 skipper Benjy Furrer captained the other.
Team Harry won the toss and put Team Benjy in. Will Lambert and Aidan bowled very tightly for the first 3 overs until Will Cutlan-Smyth and Ben Cowper got away and started to hit boundaries at will towards the end of the powerplay. Both Will and Ben retired having batted excellently on a slightly sticky wicket. Matt Jones, on BSCC debut came in at 3 and continued to up the run rate striking the ball very cleanly before being well caught by Will Grindal for a rapid 37 off 22 balls. That wicket was the start of a collapse as Harry O and Ed Swift took 2 wickets each in 2 overs as team Benjy went from 113/1 to 117/5! A solid late partnership from Charlie Castle (11*) and Freddie Chapman (18*) meant Team Benjy scored 148-5 in their 20 overs.
In response, we had to reduce the target and overs due to light, meaning Team Harry needed 125 in 15 overs.
Sam Robinson made the breakthrough getting Olly Hartnell early before a quality partnership between Murray Davidson (24) and Harry Olorenshaw (20) saw them get ahead of the run rate. Both batsmen fell just short of retiring however Aidan Murphy batted very well to retire for 33* off his 24 balls, partnered by Tom Howes with a quick 20. That left Team Harry needing 15 off the last 10 balls, and Matt Foster hit a couple of class boundaries before Kieran Surujbally hit the penultimate ball for 4 to seal the win for Team Harry.
The full scorecard is available on the next tab.
The standard of cricket was very good with some excellent batting, bowling and even a couple of great catches on show. We now look forward to the start of the U17 and U19 season starting in a couple of weeks time.
