Krish Fernando (34 not out) guided the Under 12's to an important victory in the Brian Taylor Trophy yesterday, but significant improvements will be required if this team is to progress further in to the competition.
The setting was quite charming; the church overlooked a quaint village green style pitch, which was surrounded by stone walls. The home side Wenden won the toss and started swiftly, sitting at 57-2 after 9 overs. We conceded too many extras, lacked our usual efficiency in the field and overall the energy was 'missing' from the team. Credit however to the boys for gaining control of the game midway through the innings with some especially tight bowling from Sam McGinn (3 overs conceding 7 runs), Sam Braund (2 overs for 3 runs) and Luca Livermore (4 overs for 12 runs). These 9 overs went for a total of just 22 runs, really turning the game in our favour. Wenden ultimately finished their 25 overs innings with a below par total of 121 for 7. Wickets were shared between Ed Warren (2), Ethan Hill (1), Tom Foden (1) and Ed Fallan (1). Special mention goes to Toby Ricketts for 2 sensational run outs.
Despite the early loss of Sam B, Krish and Sam M (16) built a solid foundation, which was then backed up by Toby who was run out for 32, just before our victory was achieved, by 6 wickets.
Krish batted with patience, poise and he really looked in fine form towards the end, as he expertly guided the team home; well done.
The real test comes next Sunday at home to Saffron Walden in our 'must win' final group game. The team should be under absolutely no illusions that a BIG improvement is required if we are to progress.
