It was a great effort from the players today at Jobbers Wood, against an excellent side, that are surely one of the favourites to win the whole competition.
Maldon, who had 5 Essex players, showed their class when they made 180 in their 25 overs. Their opener, who scored a hundred last week, scored 76 off 47 balls and was only ran out due to some clever fielding from Paddy Ainsworth-Ledwidge. Their number four also scored an excellent 59*.
Our bowlers all did well but learned the hard lesson that quality batsmen punish every poor ball. Bertie Warnes bowled particularly well going for just 17 runs in his 4 overs. Paddy and Thomas Greenhill took a wicket each.
In response, we knew chasing 180 would be very difficult with Maldon boasting 4 Essex bowlers. It proved so as we were bowled out for 79 in the final over of the match. The highlight of the innings was Charlie Laking’s quick fire 31.
Overall, we played reasonably well against an excellent side. I couldn’t have asked for the players to give any more effort which is the most important thing.
Next up is Broxbourne on Thursday (providing the rain holds off!) which will go a long way to deciding if we qualify for the QFs of the Herts League!
