The BSCC 13 A team started their season proper, by thrashing Welwyn Garden City tonight, who are a fantastic team that have reached the finals of every year of the HJL, and have 3 Herts players in their side!
Charlie Laking won the toss and bowled first in his first game as captain. His first decision was to give debutant Ethan Baker the new ball, only to find out that Ethan had driven to WGC thinking it was an away game! Instead Paddy A-L and Ben Warren opened up excellently conceding just 10 runs off the first 4 overs against WGC's two Herts batsmen. The bowling standards stayed high throughout the innings with everyone bowling 2 overs each, and no-one going for more than 15 runs. There was a wicket a piece for Charlie Laking, Jamie Ward and Zac Saunders, with 2 wickets for Ethan Baker, after he eventually arrived! There was 3 run outs to boot, however the only negative was the 4 dropped catches. WGC got 114-8 in their 20 overs.
We knew they had two good bowlers which openers Harry Pigram and Charlie Laking managed to see off sensibly, before upping the run rate. Unfortunately Harry was run out but everyone else who came in batted excellently, scoring plenty of boundaries. Charlie Laking (30*), Ben Foster (33*), Zac Saunders (32*) all retired, with with starts for Ben Warren (17) and Henry Hawkins (14*) too. We actually knocked off their 114 inside 13 overs, so decided to bat the whole innings to give everyone a go, finishing with 181-3!
The all round performance was excellent, and to thrash WGC is a very impressive start to the season. Fingers crossed we can play this well every game this year!
PS: Thanks to U10s Austen and Lewis Greenhill who helped field whilst Ethan was in WGC, they even managed a run out each!
