With Stortford electing to bat and all players wanting to pad up when they saw the good track and fast outfield, Bradley Moon and Joe Stanbrough got the nod to open. But from a promising position of 44 for 1 after 7 overs (Moon 33 Retired & Warman 10) the Stortford middle order allowed Letchworth back into the game with a selection of ill-chosen shots. We lost the next 4 wickets for 2 runs. Criminal.
However, tucked away in the lower order we had Bassingthwaighte (31 no)and Miles (27) who are seasoned in partnership building. Both dined on the change bowling and with good running and excellent shot selection were able to see us to a total of 147.
The Letchworth reply began with a bang with the openers liking the pace of Miles (0-27) and Walsh (1-25) to put on 52 from their first 7 overs. However with the retirement of Sprittles (33) the door was opened to attack the Letchworth middle order. Accurate bowling from Chris Millns (1-12) and Bassingthwaighte (1-13) did the trick along with improved ground fielding and catching. With Joel Ellis taking 1-15 it was left to skipper Bradley Moon to spot the chance of a couple of tailend wickets who wrapped up the win with 2-2.
In the end it was a comfortable win but there is still lots to work on for our middle order batsmen. Each game we stress the importance of shot selection, defending the good ball and valuing your wicket. You can then build an innings and partnerships. That's what my granny told me and you could not argue with her.
