On another grey evening at the club, we finally got our 2013 season going with a comfortable victory against a spirited Letchworth team.
Skipper Harry Griffin won the toss and elected to bat, and opening pair Will Price and Joe Stanborough got the side off to a fine start. Joe put away anything loose on the leg side, and Will played in his normal elegant, correct style. After six overs we had 34 and were looking comfortable, but spinner Rayat bowled Will for 13 with one that turned sharply, and Joe fell to the same bowler for 19 a few overs later.
This brought little respite to Letchworth, as Joe Hawkins and Coby Miles proceeded to hammer their bowling, with Coby in particular in excellent form. With four fours and two sixes, he retired in quick time, and Joe followed not long after.
A total of 149-4 was always going to prove challenging and Harry Griffin and Sam Gardner both produced testing opening spells to put the visitors behind the clock. Harry bowled Gore for 0 and Sam generated real pace that the batsman found disconcerting.
Will Price bowled well, Ben Warman picked up a wicket thanks to a good catch from Joe Stanborough, and the result was in no doubt by the middle of the innings when Letchworth were only 45-2.
Harry came back to finish with 3-13 and Sam and Joe Burslem also picked up wickets. Our fielding and catching were generally excellent and the team spirit was very encouraging.
Hopefully all the boys will gain in confidence from this performance and prevail in some of the tougher fixtures that are approaching.
