On a day that originally was supposed to see the U14A take on Sawbo and the U14B take on Broxbourne, due to Sawbo pulling out of the league and Broxbourne calling the game off due to risk of rain, we ended up with a mixed U14 inter squad 25 over game at BSCC today.
Thomas Greenhill’s team batted first with Thomas (30*) and Henry Hawkins (24*) both batting very well for their second 50 run partnership in a row, although it should be said Thomas was out plumb LBW second ball of the game to Ben Warren but no-one appealed! After that partnership, wickets fell regularly throughout the innings, with Harry Pigram (12) and Cameron Wach’s rapid 26 off 12 backs the only other innings of note. Joel Bagnall and Charlie Fair bowled really well for 2 wickets each, with one a piece for Jamie Ward and Ben Foster.
In response, Alex Warren had opposition captain Charlie Laking smartly stumped by Henry Hawkins early on before another excellent partnership. This time it was Jamie Ward (17*) who batted steadily and Ben Foster who returned to form in style with a magnificent 52* off his 30 balls, hitting boundaries all around the wicket. After they both retired, Ben Warren (32*) continued the dominant batting along with George Lello (13). A couple of late wickets for Luca Barnes and George Howes were in vain as Charlie’s team won with 4.1 overs to spare.
The game played at a good standard, especially baring in mind the temperature and the wind. The highlight was Ben Foster’s excellent 52* although there was plenty of other good batting on show too! One area we need to improve on is our ability to take early wickets against quality batting.
The next game is the U14 derby between the U14A and U14B team in the Herts league next Monday. It should make for an exciting game with two good teams in show!
