A narrow loss at Jobbers Wood

A great game last night at Jobbers Wood in very hot conditions. We got put in to bat having lost the toss with JP and Luke opening. Luke was uncharacteristically bowled out and JP was rather unluckily ran out. They made a reasonable start though keeping the run rate ticking along at a reasonable rate, although it was soon clear that the wicket was making the ball difficult to get away and that a low total was likely. Josh, batting at number 3 was the first batsman into double figures (12), but wickets continued to tumble and we were soon at a very precarious 29 for 4. Jake steadied the middle order with a fairly quick 20, but wickets continued to tumble and we were at 57 for 7 after 13 overs. After Jake had gone, Harry (13 NO) and Brendan (20 NO) batting at 9 and 10 put on a magnificent rear guard action with an unbeaten 36 for the 9th wicket partnership, with some fantastic boundaries bringing the run rate up, and getting us to 100 off 20 overs which was a fairly decent target on a tough batting wicket. Well done to Thomas Greenhill, a BSCC u13 member who took 3 wickets for 3 runs in his 2 overs.

The opening pair of Will Dommett and Matthew Lambert got the Boys High off to a predictably good start but we contained the batting side reasonably well until Will Hale arrived at the crease. He made 26 retiring off just 17 balls and put his side in a very commanding position. With only 4 overs remaining the Boys High required just 9 runs to win. Dylan bowled 2 superb overs including a triple wicket maiden in his second over to keep us in with a chance. The fielding was excellent in the last few overs as BSCC sensed a victory might be possible and just 5 was required of the last over. With a boundary off the second ball of the over the game was won by Boys High. It was a very exciting finish and a game played in great spirit with so many of the players knowing each other. Tighter fielding might have seen us win, but hats off to WIll Hale for a very quick 26 which made all the difference on the night.
