The U14's let Preston bat first on a worn wicket that looked would help the bowler. And it started so well for with Max taking the first of his two wickets with the first ball of the match. Max was the pick of the bowlers - taking 2 for 12 from 4 overs and causing problems for the Preston top order by bowling a good line and length. The variable bounce nearly upsetting the Preston batsmen.
However the strong Preston batting line up soon hit their straps hitting regular boundaries from some more wayward bowling.
With 2 batsmen retiring at 40 the boys had the opportunity to restrict the middle order. However the home side were able to maintain the scoring rate and posted 166 for the loss of 4 wickets.
The reply began in the worst possible fashion. We lost 2 wickets in the first over with the wicket playing some part - one that kept low and one that bounced excessively.
This left Murray and Max needing to repair the innings. This they did well - both batting well through to retirement at 40.
The Preston bowling and fielding was far more controlling and the innings finished on 137 for 5
Preston have been by far the strongest team in our league and will be a tough side to face when they progress to the QFs
We still have a slight chance of progressing to the QFs and therefore need a strong team and showing at Welwyn next Friday 29th June
