Wells good enough to contain both the rain and Stortford

Chappers decided to bat on a sunny day on a hard wicket with short boundaries. He was somewhate disconcerted therefore to see his side at 5 for 2 having lost both openers. It was down to the middle order to help the side recover. Sumo led the way with a quick 34, but injured his calf in so doing. Ewan Thomas brought his defensive bat and thus could only deal in boundaries, while John Merrell cover drove a superb 6 but gave up the ghost at 28 trying to repeat the shot.
It was left to Matt Draper and Wilko to post a challenging target and 100 runs later they had done that. Matt flayed the bowling into the car parks for a brisk 49 while Dave was a little more circumspect for his 61, both running some terrifying singles. 229 all out sounds a good score, but on that wicket and with Stortford a bowler light it was probably about 40 below par.
So it was to prove, as the young and strong Wells batting line up made itself felt, (although the teenager who was dismissed caught Sumner bowled Cluderay may have realised that youth is not everything!) The home batsmen took some calculated and successful risks as the rain came closer, but via a superb 127 from Rahul Patel brought victory by 6 wickets just as the first drops fell.
The only excitement in the Stortford camp came when Wilko claimed the all-rounder slot after his 1-23 from two overs.
