Last ball finish in BSCC Derby

When we got word from Andy the groundsmen that the pitch was unplayable at BSCC at 10am, we thought we wouldn’t get the game in, but fortunately the astro turf pitch was available at Jobbers Wood which allowed us to get a full match in.

We (U12s) chose to bowl first, but it was the U13s who started well, playing sensibly and putting away the occasional bad ball. Damien Dicci retired for a quality 28* whilst Will Dommett was caught for solid 20 off Bertie Warnes’ bowling. From that point on, we bowled a lot of dot balls, however mixed with a lot of extras which meant the scoring continued to tick over. We took a few late wickets as the U13s looked to up their run rate with 2 wickets for Jamie Ward, a wicket for Lucas Dordoy and 3 wickets for Paddy Ainsworth-Ledwidge. BSCC U13s finished with 108-7 from their 20 overs.

Our innings started in similar fashion with no early wickets lost however we didn’t quite match the scoring rate that the U13s did. Charlie Laking and Ben Foster batted well for their 61 partnership, until Charlie ended up retired for an excellent 25*, and then followed back by Ben, bowled for 10 by Will Dommett the very next ball. This put pressure on new men Harry Pigram and Jamie Ward who did well to put on a run a ball 36 partnership before Jamie was caught for 12. We needed 14 from the last 3 overs. The U13s did a great job of putting the new batsmen Henry Hawkins under pressure bowling dot balls, meaning Harry couldn’t get any strike. Eventually it came to the last over, with us needed 7. Unfortunately Henry fell trying to go over the top, falling to a great catch from Freddie Hickey, and then Harry was unable to find the boundary required, until it got to the last ball. Zac Saunders needed 4 to win off the last ball but an excellent yorker from Will Stabb meant we could only get 1 bye and lost by 2 runs.

It was an enjoyable game on a pitch that was tough to score on, with a lot of wides/no balls. We batted decently and fielded well, but seriously let ourselves down with the extras today. In the end though, it was very tight and BSCC U13s won it with some excellent death bowling from Freddie Hickey and Will Stabb.

It brings the A team competitive season to an end. We’ve had another good season but sadly fell just short of two semi finals. We still have one more friendly to come on 15th Aug at Broxbourne.

Thanks to all the parents for persevering in the wet conditions!
