It was an extraordinary match at Springfield today for the U12s as there was a period during the middle of the match where 13 wickets were lost for just 9 runs across each innings!
Springfield batted first, with Paddy Ainsworth-Ledwidge opening the bowling well yet again, taking an early wicket and bowling very economically. Thomas Greenhill was quickly brought into the attack and bowled very well taking 2-13 off his 5 overs. However Springfield were then able to put together a partnership as they reached 138-4 before Jake Curtis took the important wicket of the set batsmen for 52, which set off the amazing collapse. Ben Foster followed Jake up by taking a hat-trick, and finishing his over with another wicket, meaning he bowled a quadruple wicket maiden! Ollie Foot then came on to take a caught and bowled chance second ball, meaning Springfield went from 138-4 to 138 all out!
Unfortunately the collapsing was far from finished as our innings completely disintegrated. We fell to 9-7 after 8 overs. It was genuinely possible that we could be bowled out for a single figure score however Jake Curtis and TJ Tyndall really applied themselves, dug deep and put on 34 for the 8th wicket. Jake fell for very solid 16 which brought Lucas Dordoy to the crease. Lucas also combined with TJ to put on 28 for the 9th wicket until Lucas fell for 9. Paddy came in at 11 which was a good effort as he wasn’t feeling well at all, but understandably didn’t last long which meant TJ finished with a superb 28*.
In the end, there were positives and negatives to take from the game. We bowled well as a unit, particularly the spin twins Ben and Thomas, and our tail showed real fight with the bat but we certainly need to do more work on our fielding and on how to play in swing bowling as we looked a little lost against it early on, as 9-7 suggests!
Hopefully we can bounce back tomorrow in the Herts League at Sawbridgeworth.
