Let's cut to the final act.
In the late evening gloom, Hoddesdon needed 4 to win from the last ball of the game but Griff’s full length diving stop on the boundary and strong throw enabled Toby to complete a run out and restrict the visitors to 2.
Well done to the boys for their game management, organisation of the field placements and fielding in the last two overs. And standout bowling from Max with the 19th over only yielded 2 runs and from a nerveless Will D who was happy to step up and bowl the last over.
Batting first, our batsman were challenged by a quick and accurate opening attack but middle order contributions from Liam (17), Max (14) and Griff (22) and late runs from Will D (6no) and Arthur (7no) when the opening bowler returned, helped us to a competitive total 107 for 6.
But with better running between the wicket, being more alert to running singles and turning 1s into 2s we should have had an extra 12 -15 runs and no last ball drama!
We talked about this during the break. And for all our boys to see how effective this can be, the Hoddesdon top order gave a masterclass in shot placement and running.
Our bowlers stuck to their task and were supported by some energetic fielding (it needed to be!). With their opening batsman retiring on 40 from 45 balls (no boundaries!) we were able to apply the brakes to set up the last over drama. Well done to all the bowlers - Max (0/19), Sam (0/19), Liam (2/9), James (0/25), Arthur (0/15) and Nerveless Dommett (0/21).
An exciting game, with good skills on show and played in a good spirit by both teams.
And important to get an early season win on the board.
Expect some running and more fielding drills in training!
